Why I started 21st Century Education and why I’m committed to changing the world’s out-dated education system and the Australian Financial Planning Industry.
It was 1991 and studying to be an accountant. Frustrated with what I was learning at university I asked my mother, “Why isn’t there a university that teaches you how to be successful in life?”
Little did I know I’d planted a seed, and a decade later I decided to dedicate my life to creating an education system for today’s world; a 21st century education system to replace our out-dated 19th Century one.
I believe ignorance is the major cause of the world’s problems and individual’s financial struggles, education is the solution.
My life transformed when I realised my education at school and university hadn’t fully prepared me for life especially financially. I was not taught the valuable lessons that could have be easily instilled. I realised I needed to study those with a PhD in results, not those with a PhD in theory, like mainstream education.
I decided to copy; something we were taught not to do at school.
I call it ‘modelling’. Finding successful people or businesses and modelling them. This is the short cut to success and also common sense. It’s also why most Australians, despite living in a rich country, are not rich themselves.
School don’t teach you how to become an investor, despite the fact every single Australian needs to become a millionaire in their lifetime in order to retire comfortably. (The latest superannuation industry stats say you need $1.1- $1.3m for a comfortable retirement).
So the Government tells Australians to go and visit a licenced financial planner. Neither intelligent or using common sense.
At the 21st Century Youth Summit Workshops we hold across Australia, school teachers send their students in busloads to access a 21st century education. I ask teenagers the following question, “If you want to be rich, who should you study?”
A) A rich person
B) A poor person
Of course the teenagers are smart enough to know the correct (and common sense) answer is A, a rich person. Ask fully manured, sorry, fully matured adults… and they’re confused. It’s obvious you don’t need a financial planner, but a financial education.
Why I don’t agree with the Financial Planning Industry
Do you know how much investing financial planners have to do before they can get a license? Zero. Nil. None!
Would you take your car to a mechanic who’s never had any experience fixing cars? Would you allow a doctor, who’s never operated on someone to operate on you? Would you even go to a hairdresser who’s only done a 2-week course from a manual and never actually cut hair before? Would you board a plane with a pilot who’s never flown before? Of course you wouldn’t!
So why would you go see a financial planner, who in most cases has never invested their way to being rich, let alone invested at all? And one who has certainly not invested into the high commission paying, managed fund they’re trained to sell you.
My millionaire mentor said to me,
“Jamie, while a financial planner is telling you what to do with your money think to yourself, if they can show you how to retire one day, live the life of your dreams, perhaps even become a millionaire… Why haven’t they done it themselves?”
It’s obvious. There is no short cut other than modelling success. That is the fastest and smartest way to do it.
I have many millionaire friends, many in their twenties and thirties. Not one of us has made our money from seeing a financial planner. In fact I’ve met, studied and befriended many billionaires. And not one of them has said, “Jamie, you need to see a financial planner.”
Yet how many Australians right now have a financial planner and paying large, ongoing commissions to achieve pathetic returns? It’s the greatest rort I’ve ever seen.
Owned and pushed by the large banks, who own 90% of the financial planning industry and use media and Government regulators to push their agendas. And worse, they use the same media and Government regulators to tarnish the financial education industry, because it’s a major competitive threat to the lucrative money making industry of milking Australian’s retirement.
I say get financially educated and invest in yourself and your education. It doesn’t guarantee your success but it massively increases your chances of success.
Transforming the world’s education system
